Let me ask you something a bit personal … Have you received your census questionnaire in the mail and have you completed it? Or are you like so many others who received their questionnaire and tossed it in the trash – along with all the reminders?
You see, when it comes to the census, many of us don’t think it’s important or we think it’s the government’s way of trying to invade our privacy, so we simply don’t complete it. Either that or we have the best of intentions to complete it, but can’t find the time to sit down and do it.
After sitting down with my friend Kayo Johnson – the Census Guy – I can tell you that any reason you have for not completing the census is wrong.
Here’s a reality check … There’s no information asked about immigration or citizenship. They don’t ask for your social security number or bank information. The census itself is very basic and takes anywhere from five to ten minutes to complete – that’s it.
I’ll be honest though, until I sat down with Kayo, I never truly knew how important the census was. I just did it to get it off my to-do list. But now, I realize how much power it has in determining what funding and programs our communities receive, and that’s huge, especially in underprivileged communities.
Join me as Kayo and I discuss the importance of the census and how it allows us to make sure our voice counts – past, present and future.
Make Your Voice Count Takeaways
- The census isn’t just about funding, it’s about representation, too. – Kayo Johnson
- It’s our job, our right and our responsibility to take care of our kids, our elders and ourselves – the census does all of these things at the same time. – Kayo Johnson
- It’s important to see not only the value in our count, but also the value in our number. – Kayo Johnson
- The census doesn’t only just secure the future for our children, it also ensures that our past is maintained. – Kayo Johnson
- Imagine what 10 minutes can do for 10 years. How do you not have time to fill it out? – Kayo Johnson
Do you have 10 minutes? Use it to complete the census and shift the next ten years of your life and community. I know you may think, “But I’m just one person or one household, does it really matter?” It does, especially when you think about all the funding opportunities your community could be missing out on.
In the comments below, let us know you’ve completed your census.
