How I Prepare for What I’m Praying For

Now that the nights are getting longer and the end of the year is coming upon us, I know that a lot of you are setting goals for next year. It’s New Year’s resolution time! You might be looking for love, for more money, to drop a few pounds or to move to someplace new, but whatever it is, I know that you want it. You want to live that change. You want your resolutions to lead to meaningful results.

But my question to you is: Are you truly prepared for the things you’re praying for? 

Because you’re taking these goals to God and you’re keeping them in your prayers, but maybe you’re not actually making space in your life that you would need to receive these blessings. And if that’s true, then these prayers are empty because they’re not followed up by actions. And you know what I’m going to say now: Faith without works is dead.

The problem with taking all your goals to God is that you’re not allowing yourself to realize your own potential. Now, I’m all for praying to God and asking for His help with our goals both big and small, but you need to show God that you’re ready to receive His works in your life. And that means showing him that you are intentioned and disciplined. You see, it’s one thing to ask for something. It’s another thing entirely to prepare your life to welcome those blessings. Sometimes, we find ourselves seeking abundance and success but neglecting the essential step of creating space for these gifts in our lives. We might be asking for God’s intervention, but perhaps we’re not recognizing our own power to achieve things by ourselves. And that means we’re not showing that we’re ready for real change.

So I want to help you drill down on making your goals happen. And when you start achieving your goals, you’ll build momentum in your life that’ll carry you to where you want to be. 

But first, you need a framework. 

Not all goals are the same. 

Goals can be big or small. Goals can be easy or hard. Goals can be short-term or long-term. So, if we want to get serious about achieving them, we need a framework around our goals. 

The first kind of goal is a safe goal. 

A safe goal is an itty bitty goal. A little one that you could achieve soon, if you set your mind to it. 

Maybe you’ve been taking your safe goals to God, or perhaps they’ve been hanging around on your to-do list for a while. You might have wanted to do it last month…but you never got round to it. 

A safe goal is a goal that you can achieve by yourself. You don’t need anyone else’s help or guidance because the power to achieve this goal is in you right now. And soon! You should be able to knock your safe goal off your to-do list in seven days or less. 

Try to achieve a safe goal for yourself. Identify what you want to achieve, get really specific on it, set your mind to it, and get it ticked off. You’ll soon see how good it feels. 

And once you’ve got a safe goal under your belt, you’re ready for a challenge. 

It’s time for a support goal. 

Doesn’t it feel great to be here? Now that you know you’re capable of achieving your goals when you’ve set your mind to it, it’s time to kick it up a gear with a support goal. 

 A support goal might be running a certain distance, asking your boss for a promotion, or developing a business plan. It can look different for different people.

I call it a support goal because you’ll need some help to get where you’re going. Greatness isn’t created in isolation and we’re aiming for great here. 

So look around you and think about who could help you. It might be your friends or your partner, or you could work with a coach. Whoever it is, you need to let them know that you need them by your side. 

Surround yourself with people who speak the language that you want to speak, the language of financial success or secure self-belief or confident career paths. Get those people who speak that language on your team and they’ll become your greatest cheerleaders. And just like that, with effort and expert help, you’re on the road to meeting your support goal. 

Then when you’re ready to challenge yourself, start a stretch goal. 

Stretch goals are there to challenge you. They take you out of your comfort zone and into a place that’s new. They’re designed to help you to meet a milestone. 

This is why you’ll need God’s help with your stretch goal.

I recommend a timeframe of 90 days for a stretch goal. You do need some serious time to make it happen, but not so long that you lose focus. 

And hey, if you don’t know yet what your stretch goal would be, that’s ok! You might not know yet exactly what you want. That’s why you start with a safe goal and then a stretch goal, to show you the way.

And completing a safe goal and a support goal shows God that you’re serious about what you want. You’re taking steps to make it happen. You’re building momentum.

And when He decides it’s the right time for you to receive his blessings, He’ll be right there alongside you as you strive for your stretch goal. He knows when your life is aligned with your desires.
